"Once was lost, but now is found"

Bishop James Mathes of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego will rededicate St Timothy’s Episcopal Church's recovered and restored church bell at 10:30 am on Sunday, October 26, 2008. The church is located at 10125 Azuaga Street in Rancho Penasquitos. The public is invited to this festive "Once was lost, but now is found" event.

St Timothy’s bell was stolen from the church memorial garden on September 21, 2008. The bell is normally used to signal the start of the 9:00 am Sunday service. It was detached from it's mounting by thieves during the night. The police were called and Channel 10 news reported the theft on their 6 o’clock news.

The bell is an old mission bell cast in Mexico in the early 1900s. It is about 15 inches in diameter and weighs approximately 57 pounds.

The bell was found after the police officer taking the report suggested the church check metal recycling businesses in the area. A member of the parish called about 20 businesses before finding that Quality Recycle in Lakeside had just received two bells for scrap. The man from the church went to Lakeside and identified St. Timothy's bell. The police were notified, and the bell was returned to St Timothy’s. The other bell was stolen from a Lutheran Church in La Mesa.

The thieves had used a power grinder to erase some inscription on the crown and had torn off the clapper mounting ring on the inside of the bell. Yet the clapper, also turned in for recycling, was still with the bell.

The bell was taken to Banister Iron Works on Enterprise Street in Escondido; where Dustin Banister brazed a new ring to attach the clapper and stamped St Timothy’s name on the inside for identification. The bell was then taken to BronzeArtwork, a family owned foundry on Don Lee Place in Escondido, where it was sandblasted, and a new patina applied, restoring the bell to new. BronzeArtwork is owned by Dustin Snow, a local Escondido artist.
