********************************
On Friday May 21, 2010, Boy Scout Troop 667 member Todd
Stone was awarded the Heroism Award by the Boy Scout’s Nation Court of Honor
for lifesaving and meritorious action in saving his 7 year old sister’s life.
In a ceremony presided over by Christopher Vaughn, the San Diego Imperial Council,
Black Mountain District Advancement Chair, the award was presented in front of
200 scouts and scout leaders.
The following is an account of Todd’s action is from his
Mother Kelli:
We were in Roseville, CA the
week of July 20thand had
just gone through the drive up at a fast food outlet. I had 5 kids in a minivan
and they all got chicken nugget kids meals. My oldest daughter was in the
second row behind the passenger seat, Todd was in the middle in the second row
and his friend was behind the driver's side in the second row. Sara and her friend
were in the third row. We left the restaurant and turned right onto a busy road
and were stopped at the intersection of Pleasant Grove and Roseville Pkwy at
the front of the line in the inside lane of two to turn left. Sara started
chocking on a nugget. I could not run the red light through the intersection
as traffic was going at least 50 mph from both directions. Before I could get
out of the car and while all of the other kids froze,
Todd jumped over the second seat into the third, did the
thrust and dislodged the nugget. We asked how he knew what to do and he
credited his Boy Scout training. We were all shaken but wereglad that he kept
his cool and knew what to do.
The 10th point of the Scout law says that a Scout
is Brave. Few of us know what we will do in life or death situations, but Todd
Stone had the rare opportunity to find out and rescue his sister from a life
threatening situation. In addition to the BSA Heroism award .Todd received
certificates of recognition from San Diego City council member Sheri Lightner,
San Diego City Mayor Jerry Sanders, and State Senator Mark Wyland for his
actions.
Todd Stone is a member of Boy Scout Troop 667 which meets at and
is sponsored by St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in
Rancho Penasquitos.
