Why Participate?
If you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the
oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become
like the noonday.
Isaiah 58:10
Hunger hurts! We've all missed a meal sometime. So, imagine the pain and
frustration of having neither food nor money to purchase food. Imagine the
personal pain that you would feel if you saw your loved ones suffering from
hunger, and you had no means to feed them.
There is a great opportunity to feed people right here in San Diego! There are
many, many acres of private orange trees in San Diego County that go unpicked
every year. The labor to pick the fruit is more expensive than the price the
fruit can be sold for, so the harvest falls to the ground to go to waste. That’s
where your organization comes in; you can help us deliver this fruit to the San
Diego Food Bank.
The San Diego Food Bank provides food and services to more than 125,000
individuals each month. The people who turn to the San Diego Food Bank for help
are children, families, seniors and the working poor.
• The San Diego Food Bank distributes more than 10 million meals within
San Diego County each year
• 48 percent of people served by the Food Bank are under the age of 18
• 16 percent are children ages five years and younger
• 22 percent are senior citizens
• 50 percent of households served have at least one adult employed in a
low income job
Everyday someone in San Diego County goes to bed hungry. The food you collect
can help in a family's struggle to survive and ensure a child's right to
succeed. Without our help, these oranges will fall to the ground and be swept
into the trash. Will you hear God’s call?
