BOY SCOUTS HELP CHURCH WITH GARDEN PREPARATION
Boy Scout Troop 667 Assist St.
Timothy’s Episcopal ChurchRecently, the Boy Scouts of Troop 667 cleared a large swath of debris from land owned by St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in preparation for creating a church garden. The Boy Scouts used shovels, rakes, pitchforks and wheel barrows to remove invasive plants and a foot of mulch to prepare an area for a church vegetable garden. "Eventually this area will be used by the church to have a pumpkin patch for the children and other plants to enjoy", remarked church Sexton William Coffey as he looked over the cleared area.
The Boy Scouts were careful to weave the on-going effort around the established landscaping and water wise sprinkler systems already on the church property during the debris removal activity. church Junior Warden Sam Herrick helped mark out the 20ft by 20ft garden area and gave the boys specific instructions on how the area should be cleared. With additional instructions from church Sexton William Coffey
on protecting the sprinkler system from damage the boys were set loose to clear the large area. After clearing the area of invasive plants and heavy mulching down to the hardpan, the Boy Scouts realized that this is just the first step of the garden preparation. The hard pan will need to be heavily rototilled and amended prior to planting a fruitful garden.Afterwards the Boy Scouts cooled off in the shade of the mature trees, had some donuts and crackers and drank some water to recover from the hard work and heat. "This is exactly what we wanted in this area." William Coffey said emphatically, as he and Scoutmaster Gregory Chapelle admired the finished results. Both of them were very pleased with the outcome, especially with plenty of time to do the remaining garden preparation prior to spring planting. Additional work is planned to be done by Boy Scout Troop 667 on the garden in January and early spring to get it ready for spring seeding.
Boy Scouts of America’s program teaches young men to give back to their community by volunteering their time and energy. In this way they instill a responsibility for citizenship and it teaches them to lead each other to improve their world. Boy Scouts of America will be celebrating its 100th Year in February 2010.
